V Division

Tuesday August 30th - Marldon v Brixham St Mary.
This rearranged fixture was due to be played at Marldon, but as our green is unavailable on a Tuesday, the game was switched to Brixham St Mary. Marldon arrived at Brixham to find none of the home team players had turned up. A quick conversation confirmed we had agreed Tuesday as the date and the Marldon team decided to have a roll up on their own on the Brixham green before returning to Marldon. The League Organiser agreed that the fault was with Brixham and awarded Marldon the League points. This concluded the 'V'Team's Over 55 season for this year and the final table is above.

August 24th - Totnes v Marldon
After Bob Tame had to pull out due to a sick cat, Chris Thorne came in at very short notice to take his place, joining Les Clarke and Barry Hodges. They got off to a good start and were 9-0 up after 4 ends. Totnes managed to reduce the deficit to 3 shots by the 15th end at 12-15. Barry's triple held on to this three shot lead to win 20-17.
On the other rink Peter Route, Martin Rolfe and Mike Thomas were only trailing by 2 at the half way stage 8-10 down. Totnes must have upped their game for the second half as the Marldon men failed to score again, losing 8-26.
Overall result Totnes 43- Marldon 28

League points: Totnes 6 - Marldon 2.

August 17th - Marldon v Babbacombe
Chris Thorne, Lee James and Mike Thomas were out bowled by a Babbacombe trio on top form and by the tenth end, they had scored on only one end and were sixteen shots behind (2-18). A more even second half was not enough to make a difference and Marldon lost 9-24.
On the other rink, Les Clarke, Peter Route and Terry Grant dropped a 1 and a 5 to start before recovering slightly to within 2 shots but then dropped 2 4's in succession before picking up a 1 to trail 6-15 after 9 ends. Terry was struggling with an arm injury and withdrew from the game, so Peter Route took over as Skip and Bob Tame was called on to step in at No. 2. Babbacome scored another 5 shots on next two ends before Marldon scored again, at this point being 14 shots ahead. The revised Marldon trio only managed to reduce the deficit to 10 shots, losing 12-22
Overall result Marldon 21 - Babbacombe 46

League points - Marldon 0 Babbacombe 8

August 10th - Paignton Torbay v Marldon
Peter Route, Mike Thomas and Terry Grant struggled to compete with the Paignton Torbay players and lost by ten shots, 11-21.
Les Clarke, Bob Tame and Barry Hodges were finding the green to be tricky, but the oppositon were also doing so, and at 10 ends Marldon held a one shot lead at 7-6. Things turned more Marldon's way in the second half as Marldon won 7 of the 8 ends for an 18-8 win.
Overall result Paignton Torbay 29 - Marldon 29, a rare draw.

League points shared, Paignton Torbay 4 - Marldon 4

August 3rd - Marldon v Brixham
Mike Thomas, Martin Rolfe and Barry Hodges failed to score for 5 ends and then could only win 6 of the remaining ends, losing 14-30.
Les Clark, Terry Grant and Dennis Quincey also found their opponents too strong and lost 9-20
Overall result Marldon 23 - Brixham 50.

League points, 8-0 to Brixham.

July 27th - Marldon v Paignton BC

Mike Thomas, Bob Tame and Bary Hodges also started well, to be 11-3 up at the half way stage. Paignton won 5 of the last nine ends but failed to make up any of the deficit and Marldon won 19-10.
Overall result Marldon 53 - Paignton 19.

July 20th - Torquay v Marldon - No Report, Score Torquay 46 Marldon 29.

July 13th - Marldon v Kings BC
Peter Route, Lee James started well and were 8 up before opponents scored, and continued to pull ahead, leading 14 - 5 after 12 ends. At this point Kings responded by winning the next three ends, scoring 4, 1, and 5 to take a one shot lead. Marldon levelled the score but Kings then finished with 4 and 1 to win 20-15.
Chris Thorne, Bob Tame and Mike Thomas would have done better had the opposition Skip not turned up, although all three Kings players played well, it was the King's Skip who seemed to find a way to get the shot, usually with his last wood, even when a few shots behind. Marldon could find no answer and lost heavily 9-23.
Overall result Marldon 24 - Kings 43.

League points, 8-0 to Kings.

July 6th - At Marldon we started the second half of the season with the return fixture against Torquay. Peter Route, Bob Tame and Barry Hodges fell behind early in the game but recovered with a 6 on the 10th end to level the scores. Torquay edged ahead again and won the game 20-16. Mike Thomas, Lee James and Les Clarke were also in a close game but gained the upper hand to go 13-9 up with two ends to go. Torquay scored two critical shots so although this rink won by two shots the overall score gave the match to Torquay.
Overall result Marldon 29 - Torquay 31.

League points, 6-2 to Torquay.

June 29th - At Brixham St Mary's BC, Terry, Martin and Les gave their all but were outplayed. Mike, Lee and Dennis all contributed towards a good 17 all draw.

June 22nd - Match awarded to Totnes

June 15th. The V team went to Babbacombe today, Babbacombe have already won their first 6 games, so we knew we would have a hard game. Les Clarke, Martin Rolfe and Barry Hodges started well enough and after 8 ends were 8-2 in front, however that was as good as it got, as Babbacombe took the next four ends to go 12-8 up. Marldon picked up a three on the next end to make score 11-12 but Babbacombe then rallied scoring 5, 2, and 4 on next three ends, Marldon only scored once more as Babbacombe finished 25-12 up. Our other rink of Dennis Quincey, Bob Tame and Mike Thomas found ourselves in trouble against a skip who hardly played a bad wood, and even on the rare occasion when Marldon looked as if they might pick up a five, he was there with his last wood to take the shot. We won two of the first four ends, but were still 7-3 behind and then failed to score for 10 ends, dropping 4s and a five along the way to a heavy defeat, losing 37-9.
Overall result Babbacombe 62 - Marldon 21.

League points, 8-0 to Babbacombe.

June 8th. Good result for the over 55 'V' team today with a 6-2 win over Paignton Torbay.
The win looked unlikely early on, as Peter Route, Michel Thomas and Dennis Quincey fell 10 shots behind (5-15) after 11 ends, and on the other rink Les Clarke, Bob Tame and Barry Hodges, thought they were about to pull level at tea when the opposing skip turned two shots to Marldon into three for Paignton Torbay with his last wood before tea to give P-T a 10-5 lead. We had a heavy shower at tea so waited for that to blow over before resuming, and the second half was all Marldon. Les, Bob and Barry won 7 of the remaining 8 ends, picking up a 5 on the penultimate end for a final score of 19-11. Peter, Mike and Dennis also won six of the last 7 ends but did not quite catch up, losing 14-16.
Overall result Marldon 33 - Paignton Torbay 27.

League points, 6-2 to Marldon. (And we all got wet when the second and third showers arrived!)

June 1st. The 'V' Team were away at Brixham. Chris Thorne, Mike Thomas and Dennis Quincey won 17-13, but on the other rink Les Clarke, Lee James and Barry Hodges fought back from 12-5 down, in two ends, to level the scores but then dropped a 6 and 5 more on last 3 ends to lose 13-23. Overall score Brixham 36 - Marldon 30.
